Reptiles in Humberside: |

Posted: 03 Oct 2004 Hi. I Live in Hull and i want to know if there are any sites for reptiles close to Hull and in the Humberside area. Or if anyone has any distribution maps for yorkshire this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Posted: 03 Oct 2004 I beleive there are old records of Sand lizards from Spurn Head. Whilst I'm CONVINCED that these were the result of missidentification that whole stretch of coast should be god for common lizards. I've seen them a few times at Bempton Cliffs. Moving just outside of Humberside a good place to look is Thorne Moor / Spalding-upon-Holme moor (S. Yorks) and the adjoining Crowle Waste (N.W. Lincs). They're bl*dy big places though and can be a bit needle in a haystack at times but both have at least 4 reptile and 4 amphibian species. I say at least 4 reptiles as Thorne moor complex was subject to a number of introductions. Notably the dice snake, (Natris tesselata), which has supposedly bred on Holme-upon-Spalding moor, though now seems to be extinct. Friends have seen red-eared terrapins there on ocasion too. It's probably too late in the year now to be worthwile visiting these places but during spring and summer they have some of the most remarkable fauna and flora you're likely to find in the UK. They're a real step back in time (if you can find the bits that haven't been brutally raped by peat extraction that is!) Regards, Lee. Lee Fairclough |

Posted: 03 Oct 2004 Hi thanks a lot Lee i will be sure to visit in spring after hibernation. I have also heard of populations of sand lizard at spurn head and my friends Dad had told me that he caught one there when he was younger. |

Posted: 04 Oct 2004 Hi I have been looking for adders for ages and still with no luck. Because we have no car I cannot just go to a well know site in the country, so i have been trying to find somewhere in biking distance (bout 30 miles) from Hull that have a population. Do you think small woods around this area might harbour reptiles? At school i came across my first Adder unfortunatly in was in a glass jar preserved in some liquid. (Hope it wasnt killed just for this purpose) |

Posted: 04 Oct 2004 Danny, I'm not the best person to answer this, but as only Lee has responded yet...try this: http://www.jncc.gov.uk/ProtectedSites/SACselection/SAC_searchpage.asp Search for a local SAC in the "List SACs by Unitary Authority and/or Interest Group " bit, selecting Herptile in the right box, and any 'local' site in the left box. Hit [Select]. Under the EU number click on the number link, this should give a broad indication of recorded herps in the SAC in Annex II.
